Vinyasa Krama Yoga Academy Practitioner and Teacher Training Course (VKYA PTTC): Vinyasa Krama Yoga and Yoga Therapy
What: Modular training delivered face to face by experienced teacher and yoga practitioner. Authentic traditional yoga in the lineage of Krishnamacharya. 200 hour course curriculum standardised under the VKYA academy and eligible for insurance to teach yoga on completion.
How: This is a practitioner and teacher training course. Modular means you can choose one of the following modules to commit to or all. In order to become a teacher you must complete all modules. Most of the days can also be attended individually as Yoga Practice Days, the cost is less per day but there are some significant advantages in doing whole modules (see below).
Dates and Cost: see below
Where: Seaside Studio SW, Paignton, TQ32EZ (TO BE CONFIRMED)
Module 1 - 72 hour Vinyasa Krama – Asana, mudra, bandha, pranayama, meditation
This module will give you an understanding of the VKY (Vinyasa Krama Yoga) system, as taught by Srivatsa Ramaswami, a student of Krishnamacharya for over 30 years. You will be able to put your own practices together focusing on what you need individually using a book, manual and your own intelligence of applying positions and movements. You will use ‘Mudra’ – still yoga positions that have a greater impact on us, plus gain an understanding and practice of ‘Bandhas’ – locks applied in the body for physical and energetic reasons. Pranayama (breath control) will be integral with a step by step progression in using breathing practices for clarity, peace of mind and calming the emotions. You will learn about meditation as naturally arising from your practice – the main goal of yoga being ‘Sattva‘ – a clear mind, able to meditate. Yoga Philosophy will be an integral part of the study.
This is perfect for newcomers to yoga/Vinyasa Krama and those who want a refresher.
Module 2 - 72 hour Yoga Therapy – application to health conditions and the individual
This module we will look at how the system of yoga can be applied to physical, mental and emotional conditions alongside its main goal of peace and meditation. This will include applying VKY, plus ‘Vini’ yoga, as taught by Krishnamacharya’s son, T. K. Desikachar and the Mohan family. A.G. Mohan studied with Krishnamacharya for 18 years and together with his wife, son and daughter continue to teach the tradition. So here we will look in more depth at health conditions and practices that can address them, alongside ayurveda, the holistic health system from India. Yoga therapy and ayurveda together are a powerful approach that empower us to take action for our own good health. You will gain an understanding of applying the right elements of yoga, plus diet, lifestyle and herbs, to yourself and others.
This is perfect for newcomers to yoga therapy and ayurveda and those who want a refresher.
Module 3 - 24 hour Anatomy & Physiology – learn how the body works and its relevance to yoga
This module aims to share the intelligence of how VKY is based in sound anatomy and physiology principles, both for body, movement and breath work. It will explain the principles of VKY from a Western perspective and it is an applied approach to anatomy and physiology. If not qualified in Anatomy & Physiology already, a formal qualification for Complementary Therapists should also be undertaken separately. To gain insurance to practice as a yoga teacher, it is required to be examined in anatomy and physiology.
This is a progression from the previous 2 modules but would also suit existing teachers who want a refresher or who would like an applied understanding of anatomy and physiology.
Module 4 – 24 hour Teacher Training – become a yoga teacher
This module will enable you to apply your new knowledge and skills to teach others, bringing the benefits of yoga to those interested. This will include teaching skills, assessing a class/individual, giving steps/options, encouraging people to practice suitably for them, being aware of the challenges, some business aspects and plenty of teaching practice.
This is the last optional step of the training, likely to suit those who have taken the whole journey but also anyone who wants some input to their teaching.
Modular Approach
By attending a whole module, you will gain a qualification and certificate in the subject and will be part of the learning alumni benefitting from extra resources like handouts, student support group, extra Zoom sessions and a personalised yoga session (in the therapy module). Each module will have a written assessment to complete for those undertaking the Teacher training. The anatomy and physiology module has an exam.
Attending the days individually must be regarded as just that, a Practice Day. And would suit people who want some support in inspiring their practice.
